So the last couple of days I have been reading the books 1 & 2 Samuel within the context of my Old Testament class. I don't know if my reading lenses are being shaded by a particular interpretation (Dr. Arbino), or if I am merely reading what's actually in the text for the first time. As I read these two books, I could not help but realize that David is truly a shady character. I know that we are always taught that even though he had his "mess ups" with Bathsheba and consequently the murder of Uriah her husband, that he is still "A Man after God's own heart", but it goes farther than that. I always thought that "A man after God's own heart" was sprinkled throughout the text as an adjective for David, but this is not the case. That title is only used once for David, and that is given by Samuel the prophet, when he is condemning Saul (1 Sam 13:13). While it does say a number of times that Yahweh is with David, David is not the figure we have made him out to be. For some reason, we put him up on a pedestal and make him out to be someone he is not; a figure to be imitated. Lets take a look at his life. First, lets look at the first words from his mouth. In chapter 17, verse 26, David speaks for the first time saying, ""What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel?" In essence, "What is in it for me?", a very selfish statement. Robert Alter, a very proficient Old Testament scholar argues that, within Hebrew Narrative, the first words out of a character's mouth are meant to foreshadow, what the character will be like throughout the narrative. For David, his first words were indeed selfish, and I think that Alter is correct in his assumptions. David continues on, to take numerous wives (even from a number of married men). In addition, David is a ruthless murderer at a number of points throughout the text. But wait, doesn't David redeem himself a number of places in the text? Lets look at a place where "David redeems himself" In chapter 24 and again in chapter 26, David spares Saul's life. This couldn't possibly be selfish could it? Both times, David gives a reason for not killing Saul. "Far be it from me because of Yahweh that I should do this thing to my lord, Yahweh's anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, SINCE HE IS YAHWEH'S ANOINTED." Think about this situation. David has already been anointed by Samuel as Yahweh's anointed. By not killing Saul, David is setting a precedent. He knows that he will be king without killing Saul, and wants to make sure that others know that you should never "stretch out your hand against Yahweh's anointed". David is also credited with bringing the ark back to Israel. Lets take a look at that story. David was moving the ark and Uzzah is struck down by God for reaching his hand out and taking hold of it. David is scared to death of this thing and leaves it at the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. He wants nothing to do with it at this point. Then in 2 Sam 6:12 "It was told King David, saying "Yahweh has blessed the house of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, on account of the ark of God." David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with gladness." Selfish? You decide. Then, lets take a look at our favorite verse to sing about (2Sam 6:21). You know the song, Undignified! "I will dance I will sing, to be mad for my king.....I'll become, even more Undignified than this..." Lets look at David's actions here. He is dancing in a linen ephod, with no underwear on. Basically, everyone can see him naked while he is celebrating. Michal gets angry at him for this. Remember who Michal is. She is the daughter of Saul. David responds to Michal in 2Sam 6:21 saying "It was before Yahweh , who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of Yahweh, over Israel; therefore I will celebrate before Yahweh. I will be more lightly esteemed than this and will be humble in my own eyes, but with them (the servant maids) I will be distinguished." Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death." What is going on here you might ask? In my own words, David says "Shut up, God chose me over you and your father's house, I will do whatever I want, I danced naked in front of the slave girls and they distinguish me"(think about that one for a moment....) Then, David doesn't sleep with Michal ever again with the result that she has no children. Why is this important? Michal was the daughter of Saul. No children, means no heir to the throne for the family of Saul. David is covering his bases and making sure that Saul's family will not rise again. Selfish? Again, I'll let you decide. So, why do I point out these things? Because I am a David Basher, and think that he is worthless? No! I just want to point out that there is only one character in Scripture who is not flawed, and that is Jesus Christ. David is not a good person, and should not be put up on a pedestal, and that is the point. David is selfish and pretty messed up, but Yahweh still chooses to use him, and to be with him. Yahweh is sovereign, and uses whoever he wants, even those who are selfish and sinful. He can redeem even the bottom of the barrel. So next time you are told to imitate David as the "man after God's own heart", think again.

Got some sky pics as well that came out pretty good. I'm still learning how to use the thing so I hope that they will get better as we go along. I was in position to get some really sick pics but I found out that it will only hold 26 pics and my camera was full. Anyway, i'll continue to post more as I shoot them.

Well, I officially have the best wife in the whole world! For Christmas, she got me a sweet water proof watch-digital camera for surfing. It goes on this little watch thing on your arm and it pops up to take pics out in the water! I hadn't been able to use it until this evening, so I decided to give it a try. We went to the Mavericks (Superbowl of surfing) competition yesterday where the 24 best big wave surfers in the world were flown in to surf Mavericks (a place capable of 100ft waves). It was awesome! I'll post some pics on facebook later if anyone wants to see them. Anyway, needless to say, I was stoked to go surf today, so I went even though the conditions sucked! Jason Hew, and I went to linda mar and I took some pics/videos with my new water cam. The video made me laugh! I turned on the cam, then paddled for a wave and it captured it all prior to it shutting off. I only took a couple of pics, but as I learn, i'll post more action shots! Enjoy!

If you are in the market for a great movie, you should check out the movie "Once". Shan and I rented it by recommendation from some of our friends last night and it was amazing. It is an independent film about a street performer (who you never learn his name) from Ireland and a Czech girl (who you never learn her name). The street performer plays his music on the street and the girl becomes very interested in his music because she too loves music. They begin to write songs together and it is amazing music. I won't tell you the whole story, but the music from this movie is nothing short of great. The actors "Guy" and "Girl" are the real musicians who wrote the songs and recorded them. Markéta Irglová and Glen Hansard. If you ever have time, check them out on iTunes and rent the movie. Great stuff!
